Causes and Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Causes & Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are quite common in Colorado because of our dry climate and exposure to intense ultraviolet light. As you get older, your eyes produce fewer lubricating tears. Men and women are both prone to having dry eyes, but women tend to suffer from dry eyes more after menopause or during pregnancy. Wearing contact lenses can contribute to dry eyes because they increase tear evaporation. You may suffer from dry eyes because you have damage to the front surface of your eye. Dry eye symptoms can be caused or aggravated by medications, hormone changes, gland obstructions, and other diseases or medical situations. There are many symptoms that may indicate you have dry eye syndrome, including:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Itching
  • Gritty feeling
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Decreased vision
  • Mucus secretions
  • Tearing

Diagnosing Dry Eyes

The dry eyes diagnosis is made after an eye exam and the history of dry eye symptoms. While dry eyes are common, other conditions may be related to dry eyes. Severe dry eyes can be the result of corneal inflammation. This condition, known as keratitis, is diagnosed with a fluorescein dye. You may also have dry eyes due to an autoimmune condition called Sjogren’s syndrome. This condition can be diagnosed by a simple blood test. Our eye doctors are highly trained and experienced at diagnosing and treating dry eyes for our patients in Arvada.

Lasting & Effective Treatment for Dry Eyes

Treating dry eyes isn’t always as simple as prescribing a dry eye medication. Your treatment plan may require more than one step. Non-prescription artificial tears are sometimes used to prevent dry eyes. Other things dry eye sufferers can do include staying well hydrated, using hot compresses and humidifiers, and taking supplements. Prescription eye drops are often an effective way to treat dry eyes. A dry eye examination is required in order for our team to create the ideal treatment for you.

Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

Another treatment option for dry eyes is called Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL. This revolutionary treatment for dry eyes improves the function of your meibomian glands along the eyelid margin. Most patients who have not experienced relief for dry eyes using other treatment options have seen improvements with IPL.
