Eye Exams for Everyone

Eye exams are beneficial for patients of all ages. Our optometrists examine children starting at age five to prevent vision problems. Vision problems in children are easier to treat early, so don’t put off bringing your kids in for an eye exam. We screen for common childhood eye conditions. Adult eye exams also screen for diseases and manage existing conditions. We recommend annual eye exams if you wear contacts or eyeglasses. You should still have an eye exam every other year, even if you don’t require vision correction. Children should also have their eyes examined regularly. Tests included in eye exams may consist of visual acuity, preliminary tests, keratometry/topography tests, refraction tests, and eye focusing tests.

Risk Factors Requiring Frequent Eye Exams

Patients with certain risk factors should ensure they have eye exams at least annually. If you are over 65, you should have a yearly eye exam, or more often if necessary. Adults 18 through 64 should have annual eye exams if they have any of the following risk factors:

  • Personal or family history of ocular disease
  • Member of certain ethnic or racial groups
  • Occupations that can be hazardous to the eyes or visually demanding
  • Functional vision in only one eye
  • Contact lens wearers
  • Systemic health conditions that have potential ocular manifestations
  • Experience with eye surgery or a previous eye injury
  • High or progressive refractive error
