What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common eye condition characterized by an irregular curvature of the cornea. The condition is easily corrected by wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses or having surgery. Without astigmatism, the eyeball is completely spherical, which allows light to properly retract through the inner workings of your eyes. Astigmatism causes your eye to be more of a football shape. This difference leads to light being improperly refracted, which translates to blurred vision. Astigmatism is often coupled with farsightedness or nearsightedness.

Types of Astigmatism

There’s more than one type of astigmatism, and the type you have may determine which type of contact lens would be right for you. The two main types of astigmatism are lenticular and corneal. Lenticular astigmatisms occur when you have a distortion in your eye lens. Corneal astigmatisms happen when you have distortion or defect in your cornea. You may hear astigmatisms referred to as regular and irregular. Regular astigmatism is created by the eye not being completely curved. Irregular astigmatism is less common and happens when the eye is not completely round.

Types of Contact Lenses for Astigmatism

Just as there are different types of astigmatisms, there are also various types of contact lenses you can wear if you have the condition. Learn about the two main types of contacts for astigmatism:

  • Toric Contact Lenses – These soft contact lenses are often prescribed for patients with astigmatism. These contact lenses are designed to correct astigmatism and feature synthetic materials that are highly breathable. Toric contacts come in various strengths and meridians. Toric lenses can float and rotate around your eyes to create clear and crisp vision.
  • Gas Permeable Contact Lenses – Sometimes called RGP or GP contact lenses, gas permeable contacts are often used to correct astigmatism. These contact lenses are more rigid than toric contacts. These gas permeable lenses give your eyes a perfectly spherical shape to correctly refract light to your cornea. There is also a toric version of gas permeable contact lenses for people with severe astigmatism.

How We Select Contacts for Astigmatism

Our eye care specialists are here to help you select the right contacts for you. We choose contacts for astigmatism based on the results of your eye exam, your preferences, and your budget. The contacts we suggest for astigmatism are FDA approved and made by reliable manufacturers. We offer products made from quality materials that are designed for comfort and visual clarity.
